Having accidentally deleted all my scans for my Exam Piece before Christmas, here are a few that I've been able to scan since I got back. I am imitating Facebook profile pictures, attempting to look at 21st century portraiture...or something like that. Apologies to those involved.

First Week of Third Year

Third Year has officially started, and here are a few images from my latest project, I will go in to greater detail about them at a later date but I showed these at my latest tutorial and the feedback was very positive.

Also, I presented This is Photography at a Le Pub event in Newport to my fellow students. I'm not entirely sure everyone understood what I was saying and I do think I came across very cynical about Flickr and Internet images but that might be because I am. Apparently some first year Documentary Photography student asked why my work counts as "Documentary"? Had I been there to answer, I think I would have replied with the following: Who cares?

Anyway, here's a snap of me presenting at Le Pub.

Third year is coming up. According to the prospectus I should now be working at a professional standard. On a completely unrelated note here is something I've been working on over summer with a view to, perhaps, continue it for my Negotiated Practice assignment in the coming year. The concept still needs a little fleshing out so I shall save the details for, hopefully, another day, but it is, like my previous project, around "found" Internet imagery. Comments/criticism/questions are welcome as always.

Following the Conceptual/Book project we, like the previous second years, put on an exhibition at Jacob's Market, Cardiff. Responsibility for it eventually fell into the hands of my friends and I. Here's a look at how it went.

For our final project of the second year at Newport we had to work in collaboration with a graphic designer at the university to produce a book. Here's a glimpse of mine.

p.s. Apologies for the funky colours and generally rubbish photos, I had to use my phone to take these. They look a little hipstamaticy, but I assure you I don't go anywhere near that bollocks.

Idea For New Work

Here's a starting point for a new idea for the next project. These images are composites of the top 50 photographs on flickr under the tag 'art', they are both made from the same 50 images but are shown in opposite orders.

In the Presence of Others

In an area near the outskirts of Cardiff there are two unplotted points on the map. Isolated from each other, separated by a motorway carving through the landscape and dotted with evidence of man's presence almost lost within the environment.

In places the motorway, housing estates and other manmade objects that surround the to spaces start to close in ominously, creeping into view, hanging over them. These two seemingly redundant spaces represent a place almost untouched, an oasis in the residential and industrial dessert of its surroundings.

Over the summer I was lucky enough to get the chance to go to China for five weeks. Unfortunately the opportunity for a proper project didn't come up but I did get to take some photographs in the Beijing Olympic area and in West Sichuan near the border with Tibet. They need some tweaking so nothing great but a chance to get back into the swing of things.

For my narrative project I chose to follow the Gwent Befriending Project, an organisation that helps sufferers of Alzheimer's, and their families deal with the disease through the use of befrienders. These befrienders help the people with Alzheimer's get out and about and lead as normal a life as possible. Here are a handful of images from my time with them so far.
